Up in the night sky of December 31, fireworks sparkled and made noise that welcomed the coming year, 2007.
Countdowns started, people were thrilled and excited. The media noche was waiting at the table, together with the smell of gunpowder from the firecrackers flying around the neighborhood. Strangers became friends. Families were reunited. Children jumped as high as they could, hoping to get some inches to literally grow up. New year babies were born. People stared at the sky, reminiscing memories from the past year. Everyone seemed to be happy. Almost.
While we were celebrating, the penniless were still swimming in the ocean of imagination. Half awake, they're still hoping for a better year to come their way, just like what they did last time. Celebrating with less than 12 round fruits on their table, they're still waiting for lady luck to knock on their doors.
Still, fire incidents were seen all over the place. Still, innocent people became victims of indiscriminate firing. Little kids were still brought to the hospital for one reason. A lot of money was wasted from buying fireworks, which nearly cost some lives. New year was still the same. After the smoke was clear, everything was still the same.
We're all back to square one.
*Happy New Year, everyone.
